Modi inaugurates Pune Metro Line 3 and lays foundation for Phase II expansion

The 23.2-km Pink Line connects the Hinjewadi IT hub to Shivajinagar to enhance urban connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the 23.2-km Maan-Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 in Pune on Tuesday. During the ceremony, he also laid the foundation stone for four new corridors under Pune Metro Phase II. According to The Hindu, the Prime Minister noted that the expansion would support the city's growth in sectors such as information technology, automobiles, and pharmaceuticals.

The newly inaugurated Pink Line was developed at a cost of over Rs 8,300 crore using a public-private partnership model. The 23.203-km elevated corridor features 23 stations and is expected to reduce travel time between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar to approximately 40–45 minutes. Passenger services will begin on November 4, initially serving 17 stations, with the remaining six stations becoming operational in phases by January 2028.

The project, developed by Tata Projects and Siemens, includes 90 women train operators and aims for women to comprise 50 per cent of the workforce. Additionally, solar power is expected to meet about 30 per cent of the line's electricity needs.

The Pune Metro Phase II expansion is estimated to cost around Rs 13,500 crore. This phase includes Line 2A from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk, Line 2B from Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi, Line 4 from Kharadi to Khadakwasla, and Line 4A from Nal Stop to Manik Baug. These corridors will add approximately 44.4 km to the existing network.
