Police shoot driver accused of killing Dewas TI in encounter

The accused driver allegedly ran over Khategaon police station in-charge Dilip Puri with a truck on Sunday night.

Police shot the accused driver, Akku, in the leg during a short encounter near Barotha in Dewas district, according to Bhaskar English. The incident occurred while police were transporting the accused from Alirajpur district to Khategaon. The driver reportedly tried to flee, prompting the police to open fire.

The accused is alleged to have crushed Khategaon police station in-charge Dilip Puri to death with a truck on Sunday night. The incident happened while Puri was acting on information regarding illegal liquor trafficking. Police stated the driver drove the truck onto a divider and the rear wheel ran over the TI.

Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav announced financial assistance of ₹1 crore for the family of Dilip Puri and a sub-inspector post for his wife under compassionate appointment. The Chief Minister had previously held a meeting on Tuesday where he gave police a free hand to curb the illegal liquor trade.

Following the death, the Excise Department cancelled the licences of three liquor shops linked to Bharatendra Jaiswal and suspended Assistant District Excise Officer Amarsingh Baghel and two constables. Police have arrested liquor mafia member Keram Singh from Alirajpur district.

Dewas SP Aditya Mishra has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. Director General of Police Upendra Jain said the police would reach the root of the liquor smuggling network.
