Maharashtra schools to administer pollution-free Diwali pledge to students

The initiative follows a Bombay High Court order regarding noise and environmental pollution concerns.

Schools and junior colleges throughout Maharashtra will lead students in a pledge to avoid bursting firecrackers, according to a report by Urban Acres. The move comes after the Bombay High Court issued an order on October 15, 2026, regarding noise and environmental pollution.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board wrote to education authorities on October 22, leading the Directorate of Education to circulate instructions across the state. Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Director Dr Mahesh Palkar issued the directions.

Regional deputy directors of education and municipal corporation education departments must ensure the instructions reach all schools and junior colleges in their areas. Schools can use their regular assembly time to conduct the pledge.

The campaign encourages students to avoid firecrackers and to persuade their families and relatives to do the same. The pledge also includes a commitment to celebrate all festivals and public events without causing pollution.

The education authorities noted that air and noise pollution from firecrackers affects young children, senior citizens, patients, birds, and animals. The campaign aims to increase awareness of these effects among students.
