PV Sindhu sees rising wave of young Indian badminton players
The 31-year-old shuttler noted that several younger Indian players are now making their mark on the international circuit.
Badminton player PV Sindhu said she is happy to see several young Indian players performing well on the international circuit, according to a Times of India report. Speaking during a virtual media interaction on Wednesday, the 31-year-old noted that while there was previously a gap in the women's singles category, several youngsters are now representing the country.
Sindhu highlighted the progress of players including Ashmita Chaliha, Anmol Kharb, Unnati Hooda, and Tanvi Sharma. She stated that it is nice to have fellow athletes and youngsters coming up and doing well.
The season has seen notable results from these players. Tanvi Sharma, 17, became the youngest champion in Taipei Open history in August, while Ashmita Chaliha won her maiden BWF World Tour title at the Korea Masters. Unnati Hooda reached a career-best World No. 19 and the Asian Games quarterfinals, and Anmol Kharb won the Turkiye International Challenge in October.
Devika Sihag also secured a title by winning the Thailand Masters Super 300 in February. These results follow a strong season for Sindhu, who recently returned to the World No. 6 ranking after winning the HYLO Open in Germany.
Sindhu said she believes there is still room for improvement and expressed confidence in returning to her peak performance levels. She noted that many athletes continue to play at a high level in their 30s.
