Horse once owned by King Charles wins Melbourne Cup in sixth start

Trainer Ciaron Maher achieved an unprecedented sweep of the top three positions in the race at Flemington.

A young racehorse previously owned by King Charles III, named Point of Law, won the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 3, 2026, according to the Times of India. The colt secured the victory in only his sixth career start, despite having never raced over the 3,200 metre distance before the event.

The win led trainer Ciaron Maher to an unprecedented result in the 166 editions of the race. Maher's horses finished first, second and third, with Point of Law leading stablemates Zahrann and Juja Kibo, as reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Point of Law entered the race as a short-priced favourite following a win in the Geelong Cup during his Australian debut. Jockey Ethan Brown, who secured his first Melbourne Cup victory, rode the winner and waited until approximately 150 metres remained to sweep past the leaders.

The winning margin was 3.75 lengths. Maher's other runners included Royal Supremacy, who finished fifth, and Shockletz, who finished sixth, while Mr Monaco finished 17th.

Maher described the achievement of having three horses fill the top three positions as remarkable. Following the race, Brown told AFP that the victory was an "amazing feeling."
