National Conference accuses Ruhullah Mehdi of betraying the party
The party claimed the Srinagar MP's resignation and recent speech showed mental and moral bankruptcy.
The National Conference (NC) launched a counterattack on Tuesday against Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi following his resignation from both the party and the Lok Sabha. According to the Kashmir Observer, the party accused the Srinagar MP of betraying the organisation that helped build his political career.
In a statement released on X, the NC described Mehdi's speech at a rally in Budgam as a sign of self-obsession and moral bankruptcy. The party alleged that while Mehdi invoked the Quran, his words against the NC leadership were abusive and unparliamentary.
The NC questioned Mehdi's parliamentary record regarding the restoration of special status and statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. The party noted that Mehdi had previously gathered signatures from over 100 MPs for an impeachment motion against a judge but had not made similar efforts for the region's constitutional rights.
Regarding reservation issues, the NC stated that rationalising the quota was in its manifesto and that a Cabinet subcommittee had been formed to examine it. The party claimed the file was stalled by authorities and questioned why Mehdi did not challenge the Centre or the Lieutenant Governor in Parliament.
The NC maintained that seeking statehood would not compromise the region's special status. The party added that reclaiming lost rights requires strategic politics rather than the theatrics displayed by Mehdi.
Mehdi announced his decision to leave the NC and resign from Parliament during a gathering in Budgam on Tuesday, alleging the leadership had failed to meet public expectations.
