Rohit Sharma's run-out shifted momentum in India's win, says Shubman Gill
India captain Shubman Gill credited a decisive run-out by Rohit Sharma for the team's five-wicket victory over New Zealand in Auckland.
India secured a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series after defeating New Zealand by five wickets at Eden Park on Wednesday, according to reports by The Times of India and The Indian Express. Captain Shubman Gill identified a run-out of Daryl Mitchell by Rohit Sharma as the turning point that halted a partnership between Mitchell and Glenn Phillips.
The Indian bowling attack restricted the hosts to 185 in 40.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh took four wickets, Gurnoor Brar claimed three, and Anshul Kamboj finished with 2/22. Kamboj was named player of the match for his performance in the overcast conditions.
Following rain interruptions that reduced the match, India chased a revised target of 143 in 32 overs using the DLS method. Virat Kohli scored 74 off 51 balls, marking his 80th ODI half-century, while Gill added 37 runs. The pair shared a 113-run stand for the second wicket to guide India to 143/5 in 22.4 overs.
Gill praised the bowling of Kamboj and Brar, stating Kamboj is tailor-made for such conditions due to his seam movement. He noted that Brar provides extra bounce and pace when the wicket offers little assistance.
The captain also remarked that Kohli's composed batting made the chase easier after the rain made the pitch quicker and nippier. India will look to maintain consistency as the series moves to Wellington for the second ODI.
