Kohli and Arshdeep lead India to win against New Zealand in Auckland
Virat Kohli scored 74 as India took a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series after defeating New Zealand.
India secured a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first ODI at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday. The win, achieved under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, gives the visitors a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, according to reports from The Times of India and The Assam Tribune.
After winning the toss and electing to field, skipper Shubman Gill led the Indian pace attack to bowl New Zealand out for 185 in 40.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh took 4/70, while Gurnoor Brar claimed 3/44 and Anshul Kamboj finished with 2/22. Tim Seifert top-scored for the hosts with 38 runs, while Blair Tickner made 34.
In the chase, India faced early trouble when Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a six-ball duck by Kyle Jamieson. However, Virat Kohli and Gill shared a 113-run partnership for the second wicket to stabilise the innings. Kohli scored 74 runs, including 13 fours and a six, while Gill contributed 37.
Rain interrupted the match twice, leading to a revised target of 143 in 32 overs. Despite Jacob Duffy taking 3/49 and the dismissals of Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer, Naman Dhir hit the winning boundary to reach the target in 22.4 overs.
Kohli's innings also saw him surpass Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in ODI run chases, reaching 8,741 runs.
