Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi signals intent for new political movement

The former National Conference member has called for a broad initiative involving youth from both Jammu and Kashmir to restore regional rights.

Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has indicated his intention to pursue a wide political movement in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the Kashmir Observer.

Addressing supporters in Budgam, Mehdi requested that young people from both Jammu and Kashmir join a collective effort to restore the dignity and rights of the region's people.

He stated that the proposed movement should not be limited to a single religious community, region, or political party. He mentioned Kashmiris, Dogras, Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs, noting the initiative should have a broad social and regional base.

In his resignation letter, Mehdi argued that the political space following the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 requires a sustained struggle. He alleged that the National Conference (NC) moved away from this responsibility after receiving the 2024 electoral mandate.

Mehdi clarified that he is not announcing a ready-made political organisation. He suggested that those who join the initiative should determine its name and future structure.

While he has left the NC, Mehdi has ruled out an immediate announcement of a new political outfit.
