Tamil Nadu allows six daily shows for new Tamil film releases
Theatres can now conduct up to six screenings per day for one week following the release of new Tamil films.
The Tamil Nadu government has permitted cinemas across the state to host six daily screenings of new Tamil films for the first seven days after their release, according to reports by Urban Acres and ANI. The new order allows for an operating window between 6 am and 2.30 am the following day.
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay issued the order following requests from the Tamil Film Active Producers Associations, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association. The decision is expected to benefit producers, theatre owners, and fans, particularly during Diwali releases.
Under the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres generally operate under a ‘C’ Form licence which permits four screenings a day. The state had previously allowed five screenings for new Tamil films during their first week, as well as on weekends and local festival days.
The new limit of six shows will also apply on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and local festival days. While the order sets a maximum number of screenings, individual cinemas must still manage their schedules within the permitted window and follow safety and licensing conditions.
The government intends to amend the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules to formalise this change. Until the amendment process is finished, theatres must continue to follow existing formal instructions and the current licensing framework.
