Two arrested with pistols in Agartala ahead of civic polls

Police seized three sophisticated pistols and 50 cartridges at Bhutani Market during an operation targeting an interstate arms smuggling gang.

Agartala police arrested two individuals from outside Tripura on Wednesday after seizing three sophisticated pistols and 50 cartridges, according to Rediff.

The arrests took place at Bhutani Market in the Battala area, which falls under the West Agartala police station limits.

Sadar Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Panna Lal Sen told reporters that police acted on intelligence regarding an arms handover. Officers laid a trap and detained the two when they met at the market to pass the weapons.

The suspects had arrived in the state by train on Wednesday. Police suspect they are part of an interstate gang involved in arms smuggling in Tripura.

The operation occurred during a period of heightened security for the civic elections scheduled for November 27. Sen declined to name the arrested individuals due to the ongoing investigation.

The two men face charges of arms smuggling.
