Anbumani Ramadoss calls for 100 per cent caste-based proportional representation
The PMK President stated that true social justice can only be achieved when every community receives reservation in proportion to its population.
Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) President Anbumani Ramadoss on Wednesday renewed calls for the implementation of 100 per cent caste-based proportional representation in Tamil Nadu.
According to The Hindu, the statement came on the occasion of the centenary year of the implementation of 100 per cent communal representation through Communal Government Order (no. 1071).
Ramadoss said that although representation has been increased to 69 per cent, the fight for social justice remains incomplete. He stated that true social justice can only be achieved when every community receives reservation in proportion to its population.
The PMK leader noted that the 100 per cent reservation policy was extended to Central government offices in the Madras Presidency in 1935 and continued until a 1950 Madras High Court verdict in the Champakam Dorairajan case.
Following the First Amendment to the Constitution of India in 1951, a new system was introduced with 25 per cent reservation for Backward Classes and 18 per cent for Scheduled Castes, totalling 41 per cent.
Ramadoss said it is commendable that the government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a social justice survey and the constitution of a commission, adding that further steps must be taken without delay.
