A three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi on Thursday morning, prompting a major rescue operation.
At least two people died and approximately 15 others are feared trapped after a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi's Chawri Bazaar on Thursday morning, according to The New Indian Express and Scroll.
The incident was reported at around 9.50 am from Gali Sitara, located near the Chawri Bazaar Metro station. A Delhi Fire Services (DFS) rescue team pulled two bodies from the debris, while locals had already transported four people to a hospital before the arrival of official rescue teams.
A DFS official stated that at least 15 people are feared trapped and several have been injured. The rescue operation involves teams from the Delhi Police, DFS, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Six fire department vehicles, including rescue vehicles and water tenders, were sent to the site.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj criticised the Rekha Gupta government and the MCD regarding building safety. In a post on X, Bharadwaj alleged that departments have collected bribes instead of taking real action through safety audits, claiming that buildings continue to collapse monthly.
This collapse follows other recent incidents in the capital, including a five-storey building collapse in Satya Niketan on September 6 that killed seven people, and a four-storey building collapse in Seemapuri on October 7 that killed five people, according to Scroll.
