Karnataka Cabinet approves ₹1,118 crore for Bengaluru road project

The additional funding for the 134-km road project aims to expedite work and address traffic congestion in the city's eastern suburbs.

The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved an additional allocation of ₹1,118.50 crore for the Anekal–Sarjapur–Varthur–Airport–Nelamangala road project, according to News18. The 134-km stretch connects Attibele, Sarjapur, Dommasandra, Gunjur, Varthur, Whitefield, Kempegowda International Airport and Nelamangala.

The project, which is being implemented by the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL), was originally sanctioned in 2017 at an estimated cost of ₹2,290.50 crore. The total cost has now been revised to ₹3,409 crore due to higher land acquisition costs, price escalation, delays and additional works, News18 reported.

Of the additional ₹1,118.50 crore, ₹266.83 crore will be used for land acquisition and ₹347.54 crore will go towards price adjustments. The project includes a 1.92-km elevated corridor at Varthur and flyovers at six railway crossings at Gollahalli, Basavanahalli, Rajanukunte, Narayanapura, Kadugodi and Varthur Junction.

Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said he had personally inspected the road and directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to submit a proposal for the funds. He thanked Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and the Cabinet for the approval, noting that the pace of work will gain momentum.

The Hindu reported that the Cabinet expressed displeasure over project delays and instructed officials to ensure early completion. The funds are expected to accelerate construction, particularly in the Gunjur–Varthur stretch where commuters have faced congestion.
