Kerala becoming a safe destination for Manipur students, says Kuki group
Around 200 students, primarily from the Kuki community, have moved to Kerala for studies over the last three years.
Kerala is becoming a safe destination for students from Manipur to pursue their studies, according to a report by the Deccan Herald. Approximately 200 students, mostly from the Kuki community, have arrived in the state over the last three years, with more planning to follow.
A delegation from the Kuki Students' Association met Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, and other ministers on Wednesday to seek support. The previous Left Front government also provided support to many Manipuri students.
Goulungmon Haokip, a student from Churachandpur in Manipur, completed his law studies at Kannur University's School of Legal Studies in Kasargod. Haokip said that support from the Kerala government, NGOs, and well-wishers provided accommodation, food, and financial assistance to students who were poor.
Boimund Chongloi, president of the Kuki Students' Organisation in Kerala, said more students are eager to come to the state because it offers safety and good education. Chongloi, a BDS student at the Alappuzha Government Dental College, noted that many Manipuri students have secured admissions in professional colleges through entrance examinations.
The students who moved to the state included girls and school-going children. An NGO in Pathanamthitta supported the studies of around 45 students, all of whom have since returned.
