A three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi on Thursday morning, prompting a rescue operation near the Chawri Bazaar Metro station.
At least two people have died and several others are feared trapped under debris after a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi's Chawri Bazaar area on Thursday, according to reports from Times Now, Telegraph India and PTI.
The incident was reported at approximately 9:50 am from Gali Sitara, located near the Chawri Bazaar Metro station. At least six fire department units, including water tenders and rescue vehicles, have been sent to the site to oversee rescue operations.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj criticised the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on X, questioning why buildings continue to collapse despite multiple safety audits. Bharadwaj alleged that instead of real action, multiple departments collected bribes many times.
This incident follows other recent building collapses in the city. On October 7, five persons were killed when a four-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi's Seemapuri, and on September 6, seven persons died after a five-storey building used as paying guest accommodation collapsed in Satya Niketan.
Further details regarding the cause of the collapse and the total number of casualties are currently awaited.
