Virat Kohli breaks Sachin Tendulkar record for most ODI run chases

The batter surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's tally during India's victory against New Zealand in Auckland on Wednesday.

Virat Kohli became the highest run-scorer in ODI run chases on Wednesday during India's first match against New Zealand in Auckland. The batter scored 74 runs off 51 balls, including 13 fours and a six, to help India win by five wickets via the DLS method.

According to the Times of India, Kohli's innings helped him move past Sachin Tendulkar's record of 8,720 runs in ODI chases. While one report states Kohli has reached 8,741 runs, another reports his tally at 8,751, and News18 notes he has 8,722 runs in 169 innings.

The performance also saw Kohli equal Ricky Ponting's record for the most ODI runs against New Zealand. Both players have scored 1,971 runs against the Black Caps, according to the Times of India.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri praised Kohli on Sony Sports, stating that a 70-run innings in such conditions is worth a century. Shastri noted that Kohli's ability to take quick singles relieved pressure on captain Shubman Gill.

Kohli also achieved a milestone of 50 50-plus scores in away ODIs, according to News18. The match was played at Eden Park as part of a five-match series.
