Heavy rain causes floods and highway disruptions in Andhra Pradesh

Severe cyclonic storm Murasu triggered canal breaches and inundated agricultural fields across several districts on Wednesday.

Heavy rainfall from severe cyclonic storm Murasu caused canal breaches, flooded low-lying areas, and disrupted national highway traffic in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, according to reports by Urban Acres and Deccan Chronicle.

The most impacted regions included the erstwhile twin Godavari districts, Palnadu, Guntur, Bapatla, and NTR. In Bapatla district, a breach in the Nallamada drain flooded paddy fields near Jillelamudi village, while a bund breach in the Nakkavagu stream inundated Nagulapadu and Pedanandipadu.

Traffic on NH-16 was interrupted between the Bollapalli Toll Plaza and Tatapadu due to water levels reaching three to four feet. Similar disruptions occurred near Marturu in Palnadu and on the Guntur-Amaravati Road near Lam.

In Guntur district, the Yerravagu stream washed away a section of the road connecting Kantheru and Tadikonda. The overflowing Nallamada stream also affected the villages of Kommuru and Garlapudi, which hindered relief efforts.

Water resources minister Nimmala Ramanaidu reviewed the situation via teleconference with senior officials. Officials noted that the Parchuru and Nallamada drains had reached full capacity in Chirala, Bapatla, and Parchuru.

The minister ordered close monitoring of the Yeluru, Thammileru, Gonelavagu, Yerrakaluva, and Budameru streams and reservoirs. He noted that the Prakasam Barrage was receiving an inflow of 71,000 cusecs, while floodwater from the Budameru catchment was being moved into the Krishna river.
