CJP leaders appear before Crime Branch in Jantar Mantar case
Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka joined the investigation in Rajouri Garden on Thursday following a summons.
Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka appeared before the Delhi Police Crime Branch in Rajouri Garden on Thursday. They were summoned to join the investigation into a protest held at Jantar Mantar on October 13, which had been denotified as a designated protest site.
The investigation follows an incident where the leaders and 11 others allegedly trespassed into the area. According to the Hindustan Times, the group was demonstrating against purported irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and shouted slogans against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Das and Ranka were previously detained and held in judicial custody for approximately one week. They were released from Tihar jail on October 21 by Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) Ritu Raj after providing personal and surety bonds of Rs 50,000 each.
In their written undertakings, the two leaders promised to maintain public peace and not to organise protests at Jantar Mantar until the site is denotified according to law. They also stated that any future demonstrations would occur within the constitutional framework.
The leaders had missed a previous questioning scheduled for October 22. Ashutosh Ranka stated that they had informed the police of their inability to attend that date and were waiting for the Crime Branch to confirm new timings.
Fellow CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde was also summoned in connection with the case.
