Telangana: IMD issues red alert for heavy rain in Bhadradri Kothagudem

Heavy rainfall has caused significant rain totals in Bhadradri Kothagudem as a depression follows the weakening of Cyclone Murasu.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for Bhadradri Kothagudem following heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Telangana on Wednesday, according to Urban Acres. The weather system developed after Cyclone Murasu weakened into a depression over east Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh. On Wednesday morning, the depression was located approximately 10 km southwest of Khammam and was moving north at about 6 kmph.

In Bhadradri Kothagudem, Aswaraopeta recorded 276.8 mm of rain between 8.30am and 3pm. Other areas in the district, including Malkaram, Ankampalem, and Mulakalapally, also reported significant rainfall. The IMD's 24-hour data until 8.30am on Wednesday showed Bhadrachalam received 103 mm, while Khammam recorded 45 mm.

No rainfall was recorded in Hyderabad, Adilabad, Hanamkonda, Nizamabad, or Ramagundam.

The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Khammam and yellow warnings for Mulugu and Mahabubabad. Telangana Today reported that the IMD Hyderabad had previously placed several districts on high alert, including Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Nagarkurnool, due to the storm's reach.

Weather authorities warned that heavy rain could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt road, rail, and essential services. In Bhadradri Kothagudem, extremely heavy rain could damage infrastructure, crops, and plantations. Rainfall is expected to continue, though intensity may ease.

Isolated heavy rain is likely in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, and Mahabubabad on Thursday, November 5, with dry weather expected from November 8 to 10.
