Education must build responsible and good human beings, says Omar Abdullah

The Chief Minister attended the Diocese of Jammu-Srinagar Education Society awards ceremony in Jammu.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Tuesday that the purpose of education must go beyond marks to develop individuals with strong moral values. He was speaking at the ‘Honour & Excellence 2026’ awards ceremony organised by the Diocese of Jammu-Srinagar Education Society (DJSES) at the Convention Centre in Jammu, according to the Daily Excelsior.

The ceremony recognised students for their Class X and XII board exam performance, honoured employees with 25 years of service, and celebrated distinguished alumni. During the 2025-26 academic year, the Society achieved a 99 per cent pass rate in these board examinations.

Abdullah noted that the Society manages 24 schools across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, educating approximately 28,000 students and employing nearly 1,600 people. He stated that these institutions produce various professionals, including doctors and civil service officers, but emphasised that their true achievement is producing successful people who remain good people.

The Chief Minister encouraged students to remain inquisitive and use technology, such as Artificial Intelligence, responsibly. He urged the younger generation to question existing practices to help make Jammu and Kashmir a better place.

Education Minister Shamim Firdous also addressed the gathering, noting the historical contributions of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah to the regional education system. The event was attended by DJSES President Rt. Rev.

Ivan Pereira and Vice President Rev. Fr. Sebastian Nagathunkal.
