Senator-elect Krish Subrahmanian maintains close ties with Kerala, says cousin

Navaneeth Vasudevan recalls how the doctor's family connections and frequent visits to Mavelikkara reflect his bond with the state.

Senator-elect Krish Subrahmanian shared a message with his family WhatsApp group saying, “Let’s do some good work,” shortly after his election, according to The Times of India.

His cousin, Navaneeth Vasudevan, 45, said the message was typical of Subrahmanian. Although Subrahmanian was born and brought up in the US, the two often discussed academics and life.

Subrahmanian, a doctor, spent vacations at his mother Indira Devi’s family home in Mavelikkara and visited the location every two years. His father’s family home is in Kozhikode.

Vasudevan noted that Subrahmanian's wife, Shwetha Vijaya Kumar, is from Palakkad, which he said reflected a close bonding with Kerala. Subrahmanian worked in East Africa after his education at Harvard.

The family's move to the US began in 1958 when C N V Namboothiri, a scholar in organic chemistry, left Cheeravally Illam in Mavelikkara. Namboothiri helped most of the family, including Indira Devi, to migrate.

Vasudevan, who is the only family member who stayed in Kerala, said Namboothiri held Subrahmanian in high regard. Indira Devi is scheduled to visit Kerala next January.
