UK PM Burnham rules out inviting Putin to G20 summit in Manchester

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not receive an invitation to the 2027 G20 summit scheduled for November in England.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be invited to next year's G20 summit in Manchester, according to reports by The Times of India, ThePrint and Deccan Herald.

When asked by The Economist whether the Russian leader would be invited to the meeting, Burnham replied, "No."

The G20 summit is set to take place in November 2027 in Manchester, a city in northwestern England where Burnham previously served as mayor.

While host nations typically extend invitations to all members of the group, Russia remains part of the G20 even as Western nations have attempted to isolate Moscow since its invasion of Ukraine.

This decision follows reports from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in September that Washington had invited Putin to a G20 meeting in Miami this December. Rubio stated the gathering would allow Putin to engage with President Donald Trump and other leaders regarding a possible peace plan for the Ukraine war.

Russia has expressed appreciation for the US invitation but has not decided whether to attend. Putin has not personally attended a G20 summit since the full-scale invasion began, with Russia being represented by officials such as foreign minister Sergey Lavrov instead.
