Indian Navy receives indigenously built Amini anti-submarine warfare vessel

The warship was delivered to Kattupalli by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers to enhance coastal defence and underwater surveillance.

The Indian Navy received the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) Amini at Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, according to ANI and India Today. The vessel was designed and constructed by Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).

Named after Amini Island in the Lakshadweep Union Territory, the ship is a reincarnation of the former INS Amini, a Petya III-class corvette that was decommissioned in 2002. The warship features over 80 per cent indigenous content.

The 77.6-metre vessel is designed for operations in shallow coastal waters, including sub-surface monitoring and anti-submarine missions alongside naval aircraft. It is equipped with an advanced Combat Management System, lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, sonars, and a 30 mm naval surface gun.

The induction of Amini, which is the fifth of eight ASW-SWCs being built, marks the 119th warship designed and constructed by GRSE. The shipyard is currently working on 13 additional frontline naval platforms, including five Next Generation Corvettes.

On November 2, the Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth Rs 53,866.50 crore with GRSE and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) to build eight Next Generation Corvettes. Under this agreement, GRSE will construct five corvettes and GSL will build three.
