One dead, six injured in Assam Oil India facility fire

An explosion during maintenance work at an intermediate tank farm in Dibrugarh caused the blaze on Friday.

One worker died and six others sustained burn injuries after an explosion triggered a fire at Oil India Limited’s (OIL) intermediate tank farm in Dibrugarh, Assam, on Friday, according to reports by The Indian Express, Rediff and The Hindu.

The fire broke out around 9.05 a.m. at an indirect bath heater in the Tengakhat facility that had been isolated since November 4 for maintenance, The Hindu reported.

Seven persons from an operations and maintenance contractor were involved in the incident. One person died at the site, while six others were rescued and taken for medical treatment.

Five of the injured were admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, and one was taken to the OIL Hospital in Duliajan, according to The Hindu.

An OIL spokesperson said that 11 fire tenders and dry chemical powder were used to douse the fire after the installation's fixed fire fighting system was used. The blaze was extinguished by 12.30 p.m.

OIL has constituted an internal inquiry committee to investigate the incident, identify the causes, assess damage and suggest measures to prevent future occurrences, The Hindu reported.
