The Floating Post Office at Nehru Park on Dal Lake will now operate from 9 am to 9 pm.
The Department of Posts has extended the working hours of India’s only Floating Post Office, located on a houseboat at Nehru Park on Dal Lake in Srinagar, according to reports by The Times of India and The Tribune.
The facility, which previously operated for five hours, will now remain open from 9 am to 9 pm. The decision follows increased footfall and public demand for postal services outside of regular office hours.
Chief Postmaster General for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, Col Sagar Hanuman Singh, visited the facility to review arrangements and interact with tourists and locals. Singh said the initiative aims to provide greater convenience to customers.
Director of Postal Services for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, Prateek, said the move reflects efforts to improve service delivery and provide flexibility. He noted the post office is a distinctive attraction for tourists visiting Kashmir.
The post office has a museum of rare stamps and postcards detailing the history of the postal service in Jammu and Kashmir. It was originally a postal boat in 1953 before being officially renamed the Floating Post Office in 2011.
Adam Mohi U Din, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices for the Srinagar Postal Division, said the department is exploring the possibility of extending working hours at more post offices in the region in the coming days.
