Chennai: 126 bulk waste generators fined Rs 6.30 lakh

The Greater Chennai Corporation conducted a special inspection drive across 15 zones to enforce solid waste management rules.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) collected Rs 6.30 lakh in penalties from 126 commercial bulk waste generators for breaking solid waste management rules, according to reports by Urban Acres and Deccan Chronicle.

During a special inspection drive covering all 15 zones of the city, officials examined 260 bulk waste generators, including commercial premises and other sites producing large amounts of waste.

The inspections checked if establishments were segregating waste at the source into four categories, maintaining sufficient colour-coded bins, and storing or handing over the material correctly.

The civic body stated that these lapses caused problems during the collection and handling of waste. The enforcement follows a six-month grace period that was previously provided to these generators to follow the regulations.

Since April 1, the GCC has been collecting waste from bulk generators without a fee, provided the waste is properly segregated and handed over as per the rules.

The inspection teams included regional deputy commissioners, superintending engineers, zonal officers, health officers, and sanitary inspectors. The corporation has not indicated if more inspections or penalties will occur.
