Karnataka: Panic in Nanjangud as tiger attacks continue

A tribal woman was killed and a farmer injured following recent tiger encounters in the Nanjangud taluk region.

Residents in Nanjangud taluk are in panic after a tribal woman was killed and a farmer was injured in recent tiger attacks, according to The New Indian Express.

The woman was killed on Wednesday near Hadanooru Nanjundeshwarabetta while grazing goats near her agricultural land. Forest officials used drones to locate and retrieve her body from the Bandipur forest.

Two days earlier, a farmer named Paramesh was attacked by a tiger while working in his field. He sustained injuries and is currently undergoing medical treatment.

Villagers staged a dharna to protest the death, accusing officials and political representatives of failing to support the bereaved family. They demanded Rs 30 lakh compensation, permanent employment for a family member, and the installation of chain-link mesh fencing.

The protesters also called for better facilities for tribal labourers and more weapons and vehicles for the forest department. MLA Darshan Dhruvanarayan contacted officials via telephone to provide instructions.

Nanjangud Range Forest Officer (RFO) Nithin Kumar said the department intensified operations on Wednesday night after drone footage showed a tigress and three cubs near Akala village. Residents have been advised to avoid their agricultural fields until the capture operation is finished.
