Tamil Nadu: Branded sweet makers display expiry dates as unregistered units flout norms

Coimbatore district administration has intensified food safety inspections ahead of Deepavali to ensure manufacturers follow mandatory regulations and licensing requirements.

Several branded sweet and savoury manufacturers in Coimbatore have begun displaying expiry dates on individual products following instructions from the food safety department, according to The New Indian Express.

Coimbatore Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar has directed all manufacturers, wholesale dealers, retailers, and seasonal vendors to follow food safety regulations strictly.

While established brands have started complying with guidelines, many unregistered units and cottage industries continue to violate norms by supplying bulk products to shops without mandatory licences or permissions.

The Food Safety Department, led by Designated Officer Dr T Anuradha, has increased inspections and initiated legal action against violators. Officials noted that many units operate only during the festive season and do not follow prescribed safety guidelines.

Under the regulations, all food business operators must have a valid FSSAI licence or registration. This includes temporary stalls, marriage hall sales, and individuals preparing sweets at home on order.

Manufacturers must use quality raw materials, maintain hygiene, and avoid adulterated ingredients or excessive colours. They are also required to display details of the oil and ghee used and must not reuse cooking oil.
