Tamil Nadu constitutes 20-member Investment Promotion Commission to drive growth

The Chief Secretary-led body aims to facilitate strategic investments to help the state reach a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036.

The Tamil Nadu government has constituted a 20-member Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Commission (TNIPC) to facilitate and promote strategic investments, according to The Hindu. The commission will focus on investments linked to Free Trade Agreements, investments by persons of Tamil origin living outside India, and other specified investments.

The TNIPC was formed under the amended Tamil Nadu Business Facilitation Act, 2018, which came into force on November 3. The Chief Secretary will serve as the chairperson, while the Secretary of the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department will act as the member-convener.

The commission will review the progress of large-scale investments involving proposed capital of ₹200 crore or more, or those expected to generate at least 5,000 jobs. It is tasked with overseeing the grounding of projects, employment generation, and the promotion of exports.

Ex-officio members include secretaries from various departments, such as Finance, Energy, Labour Welfare and Skill Development, and Environment, Climate Change and Forests. Other members include the Commissioner of Land Reforms, the Commissioner of Land Administration, the Member-Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, and the Managing Director of Guidance Tamil Nadu.

The state aims to transform into a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036. To support this, the amended Act reduced the time limit for obtaining clearances under 22 State Acts to 21 days, excluding public and local holidays.
