Seven killed as truck runs over crowd in Jharkhand's Khunti district

The victims, including three children, had gathered to assist a scooter rider who fell into a ditch on Thursday night.

Seven people, including three children, died after an 18-wheel truck ran over a group of people on the Karra-Torpa main road in Jharkhand's Khunti district on Thursday night, according to reports by Rediff, The New Indian Express and India TV.

Khunti Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishabh Garg said the incident occurred when several people gathered to rescue a scooter rider who had fallen into a ditch. Women and children had also assembled at the spot to watch the rescue operation when the truck, coming from Torpa, ran over them while negotiating a sharp bend.

The SP noted that the driver might not have seen the crowd due to the darkness. Six people died on the spot, while one person died during treatment at the hospital. The deceased included three women, three children and one man.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed grief over the accident on X, stating that the news of the deaths in Karra had deeply saddened him. He offered condolences to the grieving families and prayed for peace for the departed souls.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, and further details will be revealed following the probe.
