Vaibhav Sooryavanshi named Bihar captain for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The teenage batter will lead the 17-member squad for the opening two matches of the tournament starting on November 14.

The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) announced on Friday that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been appointed captain of the Bihar senior team for the first two matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Suraj Kashyap will serve as vice-captain, according to The Hindu.

Bihar is placed in Group B with Delhi, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Railways, Saurashtra, and Tamil Nadu. The team is scheduled to play its first match against Saurashtra in Indore on November 14.

BCA president Harsh Vardhan stated that the captaincy offers Sooryavanshi an opportunity to develop his leadership skills. He noted that the player has shown significant talent and maturity despite his age and expressed hope for a disciplined team performance.

Sooryavanshi is expected to play against Saurashtra and Railways before joining the India A squad for the ACC Men's Asia Cup Rising Stars 2026 in Doha. That tournament is set to run from November 19 to November 29.

The left-handed batter previously served as vice-captain for the East Zone side during their Duleep Trophy win. He was also the Orange Cap winner of the IPL 2026, scoring 776 runs.

Mangal Mahour and Shakib Hussain have been included in the squad subject to fitness assessments following the first two matches.
