Trump directs DOJ to investigate Democrats over alleged extortion
The US President accused Democratic lawmakers of threatening administration officials and Republican donors with impeachment and legal prosecution.
United States President Donald Trump has directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to immediately investigate Democratic lawmakers, according to The Tribune and ANI. Trump accused the lawmakers of committing "extortion at the highest level" by threatening administration officials and Republican donors with impeachment and legal prosecution.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump alleged that Democrats are threatening the US Attorney General and others with punishment despite there being no impeachable acts. He further claimed that prominent financial backers of the Republican Party are being targeted with threats of detention and imprisonment.
Trump specifically named Michigan Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin, claiming she said she would go after young people who believe in Republican values. He also asserted that "threatening letters" have been sent to innocent individuals by Democratic political leaders.
The directive comes as Democratic majorities in Congress prepare to increase oversight inquiries, committee hearings, and potential impeachment efforts against administration members. This follows a shift in legislative power after Democrats gained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
In a separate announcement on November 7, Trump stated that Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller will become the White House Chief of Staff starting November 9, 2026. Incumbent Susie Wiles will move to the Trump political operation.
