Iran lifts self-imposed 2,000-km ballistic missile range limit
The Revolutionary Guard spokesman confirmed the removal of the restriction following warnings from the country's Supreme Leader regarding potential threats.
Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard has lifted a self-imposed limit of 2,000 kilometres on the range of its ballistic missiles, according to Siasat.
General Hossein Mohebbi, the spokesman for the Revolutionary Guard, stated at a Tehran press conference that the restriction has been lifted. He did not specify if Iran currently possesses missiles that exceed this range, adding that the country would demonstrate such capabilities in practice.
The announcement comes days after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khomeini warned that any threat from the US or Israel would face a response without geographic limits.
While Iran is not known to have missiles exceeding the 2,000-kilometre limit, US officials have stated that technology from the Iranian space programme can be repurposed to build intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Separately, the Iranian military reported that a tanker caught fire after hitting a naval mine east of the Strait of Hormuz. The military said the tanker was sailing in a prohibited area and had turned off its navigational beacon, though it did not identify the vessel's nationality or destination.
