NHAI to move Nallur toll plaza to Durainallur
The relocation of the toll plaza on the Kolkata National Highway aims to provide relief to motorists facing long waits during rush hours.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to shift the Nallur toll plaza on the Kolkata National Highway to Durainallur, according to The Hindu.
The new location is approximately 13 km from the current site. The existing plaza is known for long waits during rush hours, with about 50,000 passenger car units using the road daily.
An NHAI source said the current location is no longer viable because new roads in the surroundings allow users to avoid the plaza, which will lead to a loss of revenue. The source added that the plaza is located inside municipal limits and should be moved outside.
Resident K. Suresh Kumar said that removing the plaza will be convenient for residents of Karanodai, Janapanchathiram, Nallur, and Periyapalayam, noting that buses transporting students often wait in queues.
Another resident, Ramesh, suggested that the road width at the location be normalised and shops regularised to make it easier to cross.
The contract for the agency currently managing the plaza ends by May next year. The NHAI hopes to have the design for the new plaza ready by that time, and the new system is likely to be a multi-lane free flow tolling system without operators or toll booths.
