Rohit Sharma hits record number of ODI sixes against New Zealand
The Indian opener surpassed Shahid Afridi's tally during the second ODI at Wellington on Saturday.
India opener Rohit Sharma became the batter with the most sixes against New Zealand in One Day International (ODI) cricket on Saturday. According to the Times of India, the 39-year-old reached the milestone during the second ODI at Hnry Stadium in Wellington.
The Mumbai batter hit two sixes off New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson to move past former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi's record of 50 maximums. Rohit now has 51 sixes in 34 innings across 36 ODIs against the Black Caps.
The milestone occurred during India's chase of 135 in a rain-affected match. Rohit scored 23 runs from 28 deliveries before the match was abandoned due to heavy rain at approximately 11 pm local time.
India was at 113/7 after 26 overs when play stopped. Under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, India was four runs ahead of the required score, resulting in a four-run victory and an unassailable 2-0 series lead.
New Zealand bowlers Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy both finished with figures of 3/35. Duffy dismissed Shubman Gill for a first-ball duck and Virat Kohli for seven.
Chris Gayle holds the third spot for most ODI sixes against New Zealand with 45, followed by Sanath Jayasuriya with 41, Jos Buttler with 29, and Virat Kohli with 29.
