Trump vows to protect Elon Musk with pre-emptive pardons

The President suggested he might issue pardons to allies if Democrats gain control of the House and launch investigations.

President Donald Trump has pledged to defend billionaire Elon Musk and other White House aides against potential investigations. According to the Hindustan Times, Trump indicated he might grant pre-emptive presidential pardons if Democrats take control of the House of Representatives.

Speaking on the New York Post's Pod Force One podcast, Trump addressed the possibility of House Democrats targeting Musk through congressional inquiries. The President stated that he would be prepared to take action to shield his allies if such threats arise.

Trump said he would consider issuing pardons even if the individuals involved have not been formally charged with criminal offences. He noted that he had previously used such measures for January 6 participants and claimed that former President Joe Biden had also issued pardons.

Musk has been a significant financial supporter of the Republican movement, reportedly spending more than $445 million to support Republican candidates and conservative political action committees. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have suggested they may increase scrutiny of wealthy donors and corporate figures if they secure the House.

While the US Constitution provides broad authority for presidential pardons regarding federal offences, the power does not cover state-level crimes. A pardon also does not stop Congress from conducting oversight hearings or requesting documents.
