VDG member and wife die of gunshot injuries in Reasi

A preliminary investigation suggests the deaths occurred when a weapon discharged while being cleaned in Mahore tehsil.

A Village Defence Group (VDG) member and his wife died from gunshot wounds at their home in the Bralkund Mora village of Reasi district on Monday evening, according to The Tribune and ThePrint.

The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Javed Ahmed and his wife, 22-year-old Shaheena Akhter. They were taken to a local Primary Health Centre, where medical professionals declared them dead.

Officials stated that preliminary investigations suggest the couple was hit by bullets from Ahmed's weapon. It is suspected that the firearm discharged while Ahmed was cleaning it.

A team from the Chassana police station has inspected the site in the Mahore tehsil area. Police have initiated an investigation to determine if the firing was accidental or deliberate.

The incident follows other recent weapon-related events in the Jammu region, including a firing incident in August 2026 involving a service rifle provided to a VDG member.
