The state government has increased the permitted number of daily screenings for new Tamil films to support the industry.
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced that theatres across the state can now host up to six screenings of newly released Tamil films every day for the first week of their release. According to The Hindu, the decision was made following directions from Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The new rule allows shows to run from 6 am until 2.30 am the following day. This measure expands the previous limit, which had allowed for five shows a day for the first seven days of a film's release, or four shows under existing regulations.
The state has also permitted six shows a day on public holidays, local festival days, Saturdays, and Sundays. This decision follows representations from various industry groups, including the Tamil Film Producers Council, the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, and the Tamil Nadu Multiplex Owners Association.
The government intends to amend the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, to implement these changes. Until the formal amendment process is complete, theatres must continue to follow current licensing and safety frameworks.
