Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi reaches WTA Chennai Open quarter-finals
The 17-year-old Indian wildcard became the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza to reach a WTA 250 singles quarter-final.
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi entered the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Chennai Open on Wednesday after defeating Poland's Weronika Falkowska. According to the Hindustan Times, the 17-year-old Indian wildcard, ranked 669th in the world, won the match 6-4, 6-3.
The victory follows a match on Tuesday where Revathi defeated 115th-ranked Katarzyna Kawa 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5) to secure her first WTA 250 level win. Revathi stated on court that she entered the tournament as a wildcard and is trying to play her best tennis with nothing to lose.
Revathi is the first Indian female player since Sania Mirza to reach the last eight in singles at a WTA 250 level tournament. The teenager recently won the ITF W35 event in Lagos, becoming the youngest Indian to win a women's singles professional tournament.
The player's recent performance follows a coaching move from the Rafa Nadal Academy to the Elite Tennis Centre in Cannes, France. In the match against Falkowska, the world No. 277, Revathi secured the first set with a volley at the net and won the second set after a hold to love in the seventh game.
Revathi is scheduled to play American Robin Montgomery, ranked 151st, for a place in the semi-finals.
