Guntur Collector praises people for resilience after Cyclone Murasu

The district administration shifted 4,217 people to relief centres as the cyclone caused heavy rain and infrastructure damage.

Guntur district Collector C.M. Saikanth Varma praised the resilience and coordination of the people in Guntur following the impact of Cyclone Murasu, according to The Hindu. The cyclone made landfall near Ongole in Prakasam district on Tuesday, bringing heavy rain to the region.

The storm uprooted nearly 100 trees and damaged 17 roads in Guntur, though five roads and all uprooted trees have since been restored. The district recorded an average rainfall of 18.3 cm over two days, with Kakumanu receiving the highest at 26.1 cm.

The administration shifted 4,217 people to 58 relief centres and provided food and essential facilities. Additionally, 210 pregnant women were moved to hospitals as a precaution, and food was distributed to nearly 5,500 passengers on eight trains.

Power disruptions affected 55 villages, with 20 electricity poles damaged. While supply has been restored to 10 villages, restoration work continues. The Nallamada Vagu breached at three locations after receiving nearly 40,000 cusecs against its 18,000 cusecs capacity.

The Collector stated that crop-loss assessments are being undertaken to ensure compensation for farmers. He added that proposals will be prepared to strengthen roads and streams against future natural disasters.
