Owaisi calls for stronger political identity for Uttar Pradesh Muslims

The AIMIM president cited the US Senate victory of Abdul El-Sayed to urge Muslims in Uttar Pradesh to assert themselves.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president and Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday said that Muslims in Uttar Pradesh must strengthen their political identity. According to The Indian Express, Owaisi made these remarks following the US midterm election results, where Democrat Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate after winning in Michigan.

Posting on X, Owaisi stated that the Sanghis have tried to turn the name 'Abdul' into a taunt. He said the time has come to show that 'Abdul does not bow to anyone but Allah' and added, 'No more will we lay out the prayer mat.'

Owaisi has previously criticised the practice of political parties seeking minority votes without providing adequate representation. At a rally in Rampur late last month, he said that the job of an 'Abdul' should not just be to roll out carpets for members of the Nehru-Gandhi or Yadav clans.

The AIMIM chief has also expressed willingness to join hands with other Opposition parties to prevent a hat-trick of BJP wins in Uttar Pradesh, provided the party is given 'hissedari' or political partnership rather than being a subordinate.

Mohammed Waliullah Sameer, the Congress in-charge for the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, criticised Owaisi, telling The Indian Express that the leader is exporting a leadership formula he never implemented in Hyderabad or Telangana.
