Apple to restrict dating and romantic AI apps for minors from November 16
New App Store rules will require apps with romantic or sexual features to carry an 18+ age rating.
Apple is tightening its App Store rules to restrict access for users under 18 to dating applications and AI companions that provide sexual or romantic content, according to The Times of India.
Under the updated policy, any application offering dating or romantic relationship features must have a minimum age rating of 18+. This includes AI companion services, such as Character.AI and Replika, if they allow users to engage with virtual characters through romantic or sexual interactions.
Starting November 16, 2026, developers must use new content descriptors in App Store Connect to ensure age ratings accurately reflect these features. Developers will also be required to disclose if an application shares a user's physical location with other individuals or groups.
The company stated that these changes are part of broader child safety measures, including expanded parental controls and age assurance technology. While most dating services already limit access to adults, the policy will also impact AI platforms that include virtual relationships.
In Brazil, local regulations require an A16 rating for location-sharing features and an A18 rating for dating and relationship features. Developers in Brazil can request an official rating from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security if they believe their app qualifies for a lower age category.
All developers must complete these new declarations when submitting app updates starting in November 2026. All existing apps must have the required declarations finished by January 12, 2027.
