Cyclone Murasu weakens into deep depression over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

The system is expected to downgrade to a low-pressure area within 12 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Severe cyclonic storm Murasu weakened into a deep depression over coastal Andhra Pradesh and east Telangana on Wednesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system was moving northwards at 10 kmph as of 5:30 am on November 4, reported Hindustan Times.

The IMD stated that the depression is expected to lose more strength and become a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 12 hours. At 5:30 am, the system was positioned near Nandigama in Andhra Pradesh and Khammam in Telangana.

The storm has already impacted 15 districts, where floodwater has submerged crops. In Andhra Pradesh, powerful winds uprooted thousands of trees and damaged approximately 2,750 electricity poles. On Tuesday, 29 trains were affected on the Vijayawada-Ongole-Gudur route, according to Vijayawada Division PRO Nusrat M Mandrupkar.

In Odisha, the system is expected to bring widespread rain for two days. Odisha's Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the state has evacuated over 160,000 people. He noted that light rainfall has been reported in districts including Koraput and Malkangiri.

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for isolated parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh on November 4. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also predicted for Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Karnataka and Lakshadweep on November 4 and 5.
