Delhi High Court protects Kriti Sanon against AI-generated content

The court has ordered the removal of deepfakes and prohibited the use of the actor's likeness for unauthorized merchandise.

The Delhi High Court has restrained third parties from infringing the personality rights of actor Kriti Sanon by posting AI-generated content online, according to Telangana Today.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav passed the interim order on October 29 following a lawsuit filed by Sanon. The actor alleged that unknown persons violated her privacy and publicity rights, which could cause irreparable injury.

The actor's counsel argued that her name, voice, and likeness were being misused to offer fake bookings, sell merchandise, and operate AI chatbots. The misuse also included the creation of pornographic deepfakes and the circulation of altered images on platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, X, and Pinterest.

Justice Kaurav directed online platforms to remove the infringing material, stating that such content appropriated the actor's commercial value and affronted her dignity. The court also stopped an online seller from offering merchandise using Sanon's persona or images from her personal life.

The order prohibits the uploading or hosting of material that impersonates the actor, includes obscene or altered media, or uses chatbots and voice models presented as her. However, the court clarified that there is no restraint on news, reviews, satire, parody, or fan expression that does not fall into the specified infringing categories.
