Julia Child's former Cambridge home sells for $6.525 million
The historic property where the chef filmed television cooking shows has been sold following a major renovation.
The former residence of chef Julia Child in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has sold for $6.525 million shortly after being listed. According to the Times of India, the property at 103 Irving Street was built in 1889 and spans approximately 6,321 square feet.
Child and her husband, Paul, moved into the house in 1961. The Victorian-style home features six bedrooms across three floors on a quarter-acre plot. While the interior has been updated with a contemporary kitchen, the exterior maintains much of its original character.
The chef used the kitchen to film several television programmes, including Baking with Julia and Julia & Jacques Cooking at Home. In 2001, Child moved to California and gave the house and her office to Smith College, her former place of study. The college later sold the property.
While the house has been renovated, the original kitchen is preserved at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The museum reconstructed the space using approximately 1,200 objects from Child's home, including her signature pegboards and maple countertops.
The Cambridge City Council voted in August 2026 to install a commemorative plaque at the house to recognise Child's local connection. The installation remains subject to the new owner's approval and the finalisation of the plaque's wording.
