Nithya Raman's early urban work in Chennai highlighted
The researcher founded Transparent Chennai at age 23 to improve sanitation and document city infrastructure through mapping.
Nithya Raman, who is reported to be in the Los Angeles mayoral race, previously worked on urban issues in Chennai, according to Urban Acres. Before entering politics in the United States, Raman focused on sanitation, roads, footpaths, and neighbourhood mapping in the city.
Raman founded the Transparent Chennai research organisation at the age of 23 with the objective of improving sanitation. Between 2000 and 2010, the organisation worked on documenting city infrastructure and building information to support urban planning and administration.
Dinamalar reported that the initiative involved collaboration with local actors, including Nanganallur Welfare Associations Federation senior leader Ramarao. The work included engagement with neighbourhood associations in Nanganallur to document civic grievances and neighbourhood conditions.
The research sought to empower homeowners and create data for urban administration. This included mapping roads and footpaths to establish infrastructure locations and identify gaps for municipal governance.
Raman was born in 1981 in a Tamil Brahmin family in Kerala and moved to the United States at age six. She later completed a master’s degree in urban planning at Harvard University's MCP programme.
