Shashi Tharoor congratulates Nithya Raman on becoming Los Angeles Mayor
The Congress MP noted that two of America's largest cities will now be led by individuals of Indian origin.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday congratulated Nithya Raman after she became the Mayor of Los Angeles. According to the Hindustan Times, Tharoor described Raman as a daughter of Thiruvananthapuram.
Tharoor noted that with Zohran Mamdani in New York, two of the largest cities in America will be managed by people of Indian origin. He expressed confidence that Raman and Mamdani would perform better than mayors in India.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP stated that Indian mayors lack real power to govern effectively because a British-era system distributes authority and budgets in a way that leaves them powerless.
Raman, 45, took the lead over incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, 73, according to figures released by the Los Angeles Times. Raman secured 51.1 per cent of the votes, while Bass received 48.33 per cent.
Election analysts cautioned that the contest remained too close to call as counting continued. The election occurred while Los Angeles faced issues regarding public safety, affordable housing, and homelessness.
