Seven killed as truck runs over crowd in Jharkhand's Khunti

The victims, including three children and three women, were gathered on a road to help a scooter rider who had fallen into a ditch.

Seven people, including three children and three women, were killed and one person was injured after an 18-wheel truck ran over a crowd in Jharkhand's Khunti district on Thursday night, according to The New Indian Express.

The incident occurred on the Karra-Torpa main road when people gathered to assist a scooter rider who had fallen into a ditch. Women and children had also assembled at the spot to watch the rescue operation.

Khunti Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishabh Garg said the truck was coming from Torpa and ran over the group while negotiating a sharp bend. Garg told PTI that the driver might not have noticed the people due to the darkness.

Six victims died on the spot, while another person died during treatment in a hospital. The deceased included three women, three children and one man, the SP added.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed grief over the accident on X. Soren said the news of the deaths in Karra had deeply saddened him and offered condolences to the bereaved families.
