Andhra Pradesh secures 161 additional PG medical seats for 2026-27
The National Medical Commission approved the new seats across 15 specialities in 11 government medical colleges.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned 161 additional postgraduate (PG) medical seats in 11 government medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh for the 2026–27 academic year, according to The Times of India.
The state had proposed 163 seats, resulting in an approval rate of 98.77 per cent. This represents an increase of 19 seats compared to the previous academic year, when 142 seats were sanctioned out of 150 proposed seats.
Orthopaedics received the largest allocation with 27 seats. Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy (DVL), ENT, and Pathology were allotted 16 seats each, while Radio Diagnosis received 14 seats.
Paediatrics and General Surgery secured 12 seats each. General Medicine, Anaesthesiology, Ophthalmology, and Respiratory Medicine were granted eight seats each, while Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry, and Radiation Oncology received four seats each.
Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr A Vishnuvardhan said the expansion would provide more chances for high-achieving medical graduates to specialise in government colleges. He attributed the approval to improvements made to meet NMC guidelines, such as hiring teaching faculty, increasing hospital bed capacity, and upgrading infrastructure and equipment.
Dr Vishnuvardhan stated that the newly sanctioned seats will be filled through the PG medical admissions counselling process for the 2026–27 academic year.
